How serious is tight lip syndrome for a shar pei?
I have a 5 month old shar pei who displays tight lip syndrome. He eats, chews, and plays normally so I don't know if it's really causing him any pain. But when I look into his mouth, his bottom lip rolls over his bottom teeth which I can't imagine to be comfortable! How serious is this a syndrome? Can he lead a normal, healthy life without surgery? If I opt for surgery, how much (estimated) would it cost?
The mandible and maxilia (upper jaw) grow independently from each other. This means that the mandible or maxilla can each be affected by various problems that may only produce a defect in the maxilla or mandible.
With the bottom lip closing so tightly over the bottom jaw and it's teeth, growth of the bottom jaw is impended. Not only is there increased pressure on the jaw bone from the front but also from the sides. This often leads to a narrower than usual mandible. Due to the increased sideways pressure and narrow mandible, it is also common to find maligned and/or improperly crupted teeth (especially incisors)
Lastly, these patients often present with ulcers on the lower lips, where they constantly bite themselves.
